The Chinese SUV market in 2025 experienced an unprecedented restructuring, reaching an estimated total retail volume of 12,100,000 units, a 6.6% increase year-on-year. While new energy vehicles (NEVs) remain a dominant force, the market has entered a phase of intense polarization and the surprising resurgence of high-value internal combustion engine (ICE) models.

The Tesla Model Y retained its crown as the best-selling SUV in China with 416,000 units sold in 2025. However, this figure represents a significant 13% decline compared to the previous year. This pressure stems from a gap in product refreshes and the aggressive expansion of domestic Chinese brands offering more advanced intelligent features and longer ranges at competitive price points.

In a notable shift, Geely’s “ICE Duo” staged a massive counter-offensive. The Geely Xingyue L and Geely Boyue L secured the 2nd and 3rd spots on the leaderboard with 258,000 and 257,000 units respectively. The Boyue L’s growth was particularly explosive, surging by 121% year-on-year due to a pricing strategy that targets the compact SUV market with mid-size dimensions and high-end tech.

The NEV segment saw a clear divide between established leaders and emerging challengers. Newer models like the AITO M8 and Leapmotor C10 successfully broke into the Top 20 rankings:

  • Leapmotor C10: Sold 144,000 units by bringing premium hardware, such as the Snapdragon 8295 chip and LiDAR, to the 122,800 – 142,800 RMB price range.
  • AITO M8: Captured 153,000 units, dominating the premium mid-to-large SUV market with a price range of 359,800 – 449,800 RMB.

Conversely, several of BYD’s core models faced challenges. While the BYD Song PLUS (205,000 units) and BYD Song Pro (177,800 units) remain in the Top 10, they saw substantial sales drops—some over 50%—due to internal competition from newer series like the Sea Lion 06 and a general cooling of interest in older model generations.
