On February 24, Wang Xingxing, Founder and CEO of Unitree Robotics, appeared on the Weibo technology show “Technology Talk”, where he shared insights on the technical details behind the company’s humanoid robots appearing three times on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, as well as his views on industry development prospects.

When discussing the current stage of robotics technology and responding to the question, “Is the current development stage of robots equivalent to that of a 10-year-old child or even younger?”, Wang Xingxing said: “Yes, it is very close. At present, everyone can see continuous technological progress every year. However, large-scale application will still take some time. If development moves quickly, it may take 3 to 5 years; if slower, it will definitely not exceed 10 years.”

Regarding the Yangko dance costume worn by Unitree’s robot during the 2024 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, Wang revealed that the styling was jointly decided by the production and directing teams to enhance the stage performance effect.

During this year’s Spring Festival Gala performance titled “Wu BOT”, a performing robot “fell” while demonstrating Drunken Fist movements, sparking online debate over whether it was a technical malfunction or intentional design. Wang clarified that the movement was required by the choreography to convey the distinctive essence of Drunken Fist, “appearing about to fall but not actually falling.” He added that if the robot were to fall and then stand up autonomously, it would better align with the martial arts spirit and visual aesthetics of Drunken Fist.

On February 17, Wang Xingxing posted on his personal Weibo account: “Some friends have asked how fast the Spring Festival Gala robots are evolving. I would say it depends on everyone’s imagination about AI. Thank you to all our supporters, and I wish everyone’s dreams come true!”
