On March 1, 2025, Shanghai experienced an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 28.0℃ at Xujiahui Station. This marks the hottest early March in over 150 years, breaking previous records and highlighting unusual weather patterns in the region.

According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, the temperature at Xujiahui Station reached 28.0℃ on March 1, surpassing the previous record for early March. This station, which has been operational for over 150 years, recorded its highest early March temperature, eclipsing the previous highs of 28.5℃ on February 27, 1921, and 27.4℃ on March 2, 1966.
The heatwave is expected to persist, with temperatures on March 2 forecasted to reach 27-28℃, further challenging historical records. This sudden and intense warming has led to a noticeable shift in daily life, with residents adopting varied clothing styles to cope with the unseasonable heat.
Meteorologists advise residents to use the “onion layering method” for clothing, allowing for easy adjustments to fluctuating temperatures. Rapidly reducing layers can increase the risk of catching a cold, especially during such abrupt weather changes.
This heatwave represents the “last surge of warmth” before a significant weather shift. The eastward movement of the Jianghuai Cyclone is expected to bring a dramatic change, with temperatures dropping sharply overnight, mimicking a seasonal transition.
