Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences (CSES)

The Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences (CSES) is a non-profit scientific organization founded in 1978. It is China’s largest society on environmental science and technologies, with over 120,000 individual members and around 2,300 organizational members, 8 working committees, and 79 branches and special committees, covering all fields of environmental science, technology, and management. Supervised by the China Association for Science and Technology and supported by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China, CSES holds a registration certificate and operates as a national first-level academic body. Headquartered in Beijing’s Haidian District, CSES serves as China’s highest academic institution for environmental science and brings together environmental scientists, engineers, educators, and managers from across the country and internationally. The society’s activities span academic conference organization, environmental standards development, science popularization, education and training, professional awards, and international cooperation. CSES manages several academic journals, including China Environmental Science, Environment and Life, and Journal of Safety and Environment, and administers the China Society of Environmental Sciences Environmental Protection Science and Technology Award. CSES has eight working committees and 70-plus branches covering environmental sciences, technology, and management, and has partnered with international bodies such as the American Chemical Society (ACS), with collaborative work focused on water pollution, carbon neutrality, low-carbon chemistry, and microplastics. CSES is also a member of international networks including the Regional Network of Sustainable Development Research Institutions in the Asia-Pacific Region and the International Association for Impact Assessment. In addition to its academic role, CSES serves as a co-organizer of IE expo China — Asia’s largest environmental technology trade fair — reflecting its central position in bridging environmental research, industry, and government policy in China.
