Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society (CHES)
The Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society (CHES) is a national academic and non-profit scientific organization representing professionals, researchers, institutions, and enterprises involved in China’s water resources and hydraulic engineering sectors. Originally founded in April 1931 in Nanjing as the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Association, it is recognized as China’s first hydraulic engineering academic organization and was reorganized in Beijing in 1957 under its current name. The society operates under the guidance of the China Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Water Resources. Over its development, CHES has grown into a large professional organization with more than 80,000 individual members, over 360 institutional members, 54 specialized branches, and 36 provincial-level hydraulic engineering societies. The organization promotes scientific and technological advancement in water conservancy through academic conferences, technical exchanges, science popularization programs, professional training, engineering accreditation, standards development, technology evaluation, consulting services, awards administration, and international cooperation. CHES publishes several major hydraulic engineering and water science journals, organizes annual academic meetings and specialized conferences, manages water-related technical standards, supports talent development programs, and serves as the founder and organizer of the China Water Expo, which has been held annually since 2006. The society also facilitates cooperation among government agencies, universities, research institutions, enterprises, and water-sector professionals, contributing to the development of China’s water resources, flood control, irrigation, water ecology, and water technology industries.
