China has taken a big step forward with its next-generation “artificial sun,” according to Xinhua News. A vital system, developed by the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, just passed expert testing. Known as the one-eighth vacuum chamber and integrated installation system, this piece of the fusion reactor project matches top global standards in design and performance.
Picture a massive structure shaped like a giant orange slice. That’s the one-eighth vacuum chamber platform, freshly approved after testing. It features a D-shaped, double-layered shell, standing 20 meters tall. Made from 50-millimeter-thick ultra-low-carbon stainless steel, it weighs a hefty 295 tons. Soon, eight of these “orange slices” will join together to form the heart of China’s next “artificial sun,” where fusion energy will ignite.
For context, “artificial sun” refers to a device mimicking the sun’s controlled nuclear fusion. This process aims to deliver safe, steady, and massive energy output. Unlike nuclear fission, which splits atoms, fusion combines them, offering more power with abundant fuel, less radioactive waste, and greater safety. It’s seen as a dream energy source for the future.
