If you’re a foreigner looking to study Chinese language in China, Ningbo University offers an affordable and comprehensive Chinese language program that provides an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the language and culture. Located in the vibrant city of Ningbo, this program is designed for students of all levels, from beginners to advanced learners.
Program Overview
The Chinese Language Program at NBU is designed to immerse students in Mandarin, enhancing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The curriculum is structured to accommodate various proficiency levels, with classes typically commencing in:
- Early March and concluding in late June for the spring semester,
- Early September and ending in late January for the autumn semester.
Each semester spans 16 to 17 weeks, comprising approximately 16 class hours per week.

Three levels (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced) Core Courses:
- Listening and Speaking
- Reading Comprehension
- Basic Chinese Grammar
- Chinese Conversation
- Selected Readings in Newspapers and Periodicals
- Chinese Handwriting Practice
- Basic Chinese Writing
Cultural Activities:
- Calligraphy
- Painting
- Tea Ceremonies
- Guided Tours to Historic Sites

These activities aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of Chinese culture alongside language acquisition.
Admission Requirements
Prospective students should meet the following criteria:
- Age between 18 and 50 years
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Good physical and mental health
Fees
The financial requirements for the program are as follows:
- Application Fee: 70USD or ¥500 CNY (non-refundable)
- Tuition Fee: 1,100USD or ¥8,000 CNY per semester
- Accommodation:
- Single Room: 165USD or ¥1,200 CNY/month
- Double Room: 125 USD or ¥900 CNY/month
- Off-campus Apartment: between ¥1000 to ¥2000 CNY/month
- Insurance: 83USD (¥600 CNY) per semester or 165USD (¥1,200 CNY) per year
Note: International students are required to purchase comprehensive insurance in Mainland China as mandated by the Ministry of Education.

Application Process
To apply, follow these steps:
- Create an Account: Register on the NBU Online Application Portal: https://is.nbu.edu.cn/isstu
- Submit Application and Documents: Complete the application form and upload all required documents (Passport copy, Passport-Style ID Photo (2 inches), Latest Education certificate and others).
- Application Fee Payment: Pay the non-refundable ¥500 CNY application fee to the university bank account.
- Final Admission: Upon pre-admission, pay tuition fees to receive formal admission documents necessary for the visa application process.
Note: Only X1 visa is accepted for one academic year language program and X2 visa for one semester language program.
